A STUNNING NEW PRINT RELEASE

The Black Widows of Hollandia by Nicolas Trudgian

THE BLACK WIDOWS OF HOLLANDIA

Brand new and recently delivered to New Guinea, P-61B Black Widow 42-39445 of the 550th Night Fighter Squadron, taxies out onto the airstrip at Hollandia for a test flight on the morning of January 10th 1945. It was to be the aircraft’s last flight because within minutes it had crashed into the tree shrouded slopes 200 ft below the summit of Mount Cyclops. Remarkably,  all four people aboard survived. The accident was partly blamed on coral dust found to be restricting the movement of the wing’s flying surfaces; a problem found on other Black Widows operating from coral airstrips in this corner of the Pacific ocean.
The Mid-Atlantic Air Museum, in one of the most ambitious and praiseworthy aircraft salvage and restoration projects anywhere, succeeded in bringing the remains of the aircraft back to Reading PA in 1990 and since then their dedicated team has been working tirelessly to see 239445 fly again. It will be the world’s only airworthy Black Widow.
