Operation Mercury by Nicolas Trudgian

The Battle for Crete

Messerschmidt 110s of II./ZG76 with the distinctive ‘Sharks Mouth’ markings, engage low level targets of opportunity around the Island of Crete. Heavily outnumbered, two obsolete RAF Gladiators from 112 Squadron bravely defy the odds to intercept the intruder. The Luftwaffe are seeking to inflict heavy damage to the Island’s defences, a few days before the start of Operation Mercury – the invasion of Crete by German Airborne Forces. May 1941.
