The Duxford Wing by Nicolas Trudgian

Heading towards London in the golden light of an afternoon in October 1940, Sgt. Ken Wilkinson, a Spitfire pilot newly assigned to 19 Squadron at RAF Fowlmere, forms up with Hurricanes of 310 Squadron from RAF Duxford. Along with dozens of other fighters from ’12 Group’ they will gather to form Duxford’s famous ‘Big Wing’, led by 242 Squadron commander,  Squadron Leader Douglas Bader.  Their task is to protect the airfields of ’11 Group’,  located around the capital and the South East, while fighters from those bases are busy intercepting enemy bombers, primarily over London itself.  The “Big Wing” strategy was controversial, sparking disagreements among the leaders of 11 and 12 Group that continued long after the Battle of Britain had been won.
